Sindhudurg Diocese publishes first Bible in Devanagari Konkani language

On 13 October 2019, the Diocese of Sindhudurg released the first Bible translated into the Konkani language and transcribed into the Devanagari alphabet for the lay faithful. The occasion was graced by Bishop Alwyn Barreto and Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and Daman.

The main objective of this project was to ensure that every family in the diocese is able to read and study the Word of God in their own language. The initiative began in 2014 under the guidance of Fr Andrew D’mello, Vicar General of the diocese.

Speaking on the occasion, Bishop Barreto said: “It is important to have the Devanagari text in writing for the extraordinary missionary Month

so that we can evangelize and spiritually feed our people through the Bible, which is now available in our own local language and dialect. We have currently printed eight thousand copies so that the families can have their copy to read, study and live the Word.”

Fr. D’mello added: “We spent many tireless hours in the transliteration, composition, proofreading and we are really happy to see the publication of the first Devanagari Bible. Our greatest dream of having the Bible in Devanagari Konkani has come true.”
